On August 1, 2022, the Qingdao Municipal Development and Reform Commission announced the list of municipal engineering research centers recognized in 2022, and the "Qingdao C1 Refining Engineering Research Center" declared by the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences, was officially approved. The center is jointly declared and operated by the Molecular & Microbial Engineering Group, the Enzymatic C1 Conversion Group, the Eco-friendly Catalytic Process Group, the Pilot Test Technical Service Center and other departments of QIBEBT.

Focusing on C1 resources such as CO2, CO, methane, methanol and formic acid, Qingdao Carbon 1 Refining Engineering Research Center develops C1 green transformation technology to serve the national carbon peaking and carbon neutralization strategy. It devotes to build platforms for C1 microbial resources and evolution, enzyme engineering catalysis, chemical biological transformation coupled with electro catalysis and hydrogen catalysis, as well as biological fermentation and catalytic pilot scale test. The establishment of Qingdao Carbon 1 Refining Engineering Research Center forms a strong team with interdisciplinary, complementary academic resources and multi-scale integration. It emphasizes the deep cooperation and integration of production, learning and research in the field of C1 refining, and can realize the comprehensive advantages of theoretical construction, basic data, technology accumulation and innovation.

In the future, the center focuses on the construction of pilot scale and industrial demonstration systems for the conversion of CO2 and CO into clean energy and high value-added products. Qingdao C1 Refining Engineering Research Center will achieve effective integration on the basis of existing resources, technologies and talents, continue to strengthen talent training, platform construction, basic theoretical research and application technology development, focus on pilot scale up technology, train technical talents, solve the bottleneck problem in the process of technology scaling up, and develop complete sets of technical processes. It will continue to focus on project demonstration and industrialization promotion, strengthen cooperation between industry, education and research, solve technical problems in large-scale production and market-oriented applications. After 3-5 years of construction, the center will apply for a batch of important patents, achieve in-depth industrial cooperation or technology transfer, and become an important platform for the development of carbon resources and utilization technologies in China.
