Recently, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announced the results of the 2022 annual fund review, and the proposal titled "The key technology for syngas fermentation into fuel ethanol using microbial catalysts" applied by Professor Li Fuli, has been supported by key grogram of Regional Joint Fund of NSFC, with an approved fund of 2.55 million yuan.

The molecular and microbial engineering group has conducted long-term and systematic research on the biological transformation of synthetic gas. Aiming at the key problem in the process of syngas fermentation into biofuels, low cell density, researchers of the group improved the traditional biological reactor, which increased the cell density by 8 times compared with the traditional bioreactor, and the corresponding ethanol production was also greatly increased, meeting the requirements of pilot test.

Based on the needs of energy structure optimization and high-quality development of Shandong province, the guide to the key programs of Regional Joint Fund of NSFC in 2022, proposes to support the research on "core technologies for preparing fuel ethanol from coal chemical/steel plant tail gas and carbon one component (CO/CO2) in gas resources". In view of “the Guide”, aiming at the challenges of low gas-liquid mass transfer, slow microbial growth, high energy consumption of product separation and low carbon fixation rate in commercialization of syngas fermentation into biofuels using microbial catalysts, Professor Li Fuli cooperates with Nanjing TECH University and the multiphase reaction engineering group, proposed to carry out the study from the aspects of reactor design, process parameter control, microbial transformation, product membrane separation engineering and electrochemical coupling in order to establish the competitive key technology for syngas fermentation into biofuels using microbial catalysts.
